What Age Can Kittens Drink Cow S Milk
I grew up on a dairy farm.
What age can kittens drink cow s milk. They begged for milk when we stripped out the cows. Milk is a food not a beverage female mammals produce milk to feed their own offspring. Weaning can take place later if a kitten is underweight or ill and it is important to use your best judgement when weaning. The best possible milk is from the kitten s mother.
Newborn kittens should ideally feed through their mother s breast milk if unfortunately you are in the care of a kitten that has been orphaned we do not recommend giving it cow s milk. The aspca states that this milk provides all of a kitten s required nourishment. Typically kittens are eating solid foods by 8 to 10 weeks old. If milk was bad for cats then they would all be dead.
Cow s milk can upset a kitten s stomach and should be used as a last resort. Kittens tend to tolerate goat milk better because it s lower in lactose and the milk protein casein than cow milk. Once weaning is complete and cats move on to more adult foods and water dishes. Kittens derive far more than simple nutrition from their mother in the eight to 10 weeks that they spend nursing.
Kittens should be drinking water by the time they are 4 to 6 weeks of age. Most kittens need to be nursed by their mother or fed kitten formula from a bottle until 4 5 weeks of age. However this isn t a hard and fast rule. No other sustenance not even water is yet required.
It is extremely important that you do not give a young kitten cow s milk. Kittens drink their mother s milk until the mother gradually weans them as early as 4 weeks old. Cats can and will drink cow milk if it is offered to them but much like ice cream it s not actually very healthy for them. All young kittens must have milk in order to survive.
Whole 2 percent and skim cow s milk can also add unhealthy amounts of fat to your cat s diet since cats don t have the enzyme necessary for digesting lactose drinking milk can lead. The reason for this is because the composition of cow s milk is different from breast milk and therefore the animal would not be receiving the nutrients lipids and proteins that it really needs. If they drink too much milk most adult cats will experience some. Up until kitties reach approximately 1 month in age anything other than their mother s milk is totally unnecessary.
We had 30 to 40 cats at any given time. So can cats drink cow milk.
