When Do Premature Puppies Open Their Eyes

Immature little pups take a little longer time to open their eyes. This is in great contrast with precocial species which encompasses animals who are able to see and even stand from the day they are born.

Usually in about ten days to two weeks. Eye opening merely indicates that they have effectively put their blind stage behind. Sometimes in one litter one puppy may open his eyes after 9 days while another may open his after 14 days and yet another will open his after 18 days. Their hearing will continue to develop until the puppies are around eight weeks old.

During the first day of opening a newborn puppy s eyesight may not be capable yet of seeing too well. Puppies can see only blurry things at the initial stage as they open the eyes in between 10 14 days. Eyesight helps the puppies socialize more. Usually healthy pups take eight weeks while other pups with some immature signs can take up to three months.

A very large litter or a singleton pup can throw this off a day or two. Puppies open their eyes after being born because they are an altricial species. Puppies are whelped 63 days after ovulation not after breeding. But even then two week old puppies won t see the world clearly.
